US Central Standard Time (CST) is 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time ( GMT-6 ). Green Bay and Racine are other major cities.Wisconsin is in the Central Time Zone in the United States of America (USA). Madison is the Wisconsin state capital and the second largest city Milwaukee is the largest city. Population of Wisconsin is 5,686,986 according to 2010 census. The state of Wisconsin name is abbreviated WI (US postal), Wis, or Wisc. Other theories are that the name comes from words meaning "Gathering of the Waters" or "Great Rock." Wisconsin originally was applied to the Wisconsin River and later to the area as a whole when Wisconsin became a territory. The Ojibwe word Miskasinsin, meaning "Red-stone place", was probably the name given to the Wisconsin River, which then was recorded as Ouisconsin by the French and changed to its current form by the English. Although the exact etymology of the name is uncertain, "Wisconsin" is thought to be an English version of a French adaptation of an Indian word.
